SSC ENTRY for IAF as a pilot both FOR MEN AND WOMEN Through AFCAT Exam :
The Short Term Service Commissions (SSC) in Air Force is only for 14 years. This term is not extendable. For SSC entry you can apply through AFCAT for SSC in the Flying Branch.
Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is the only path which allows both men & women to get into the flying branch for Short Service Commission. Short Service Commission in flying branch is for 14 years with no further extension.

Eligibility criteria for IAF Pilot through SSC:
Age – For SSC selection, your age must be between 20 to 24 years at the time of commencement of course. Upper age limit is relaxed up to 26 years for Candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot License issued by DGCA (India).
Nationality – An Indian citizen can apply for this post.
Marital Status – You must be single.
Gender - Both male and female candidates can join air force through this mode of selection.
Educational Qualifications:
(a) You can apply for IAF through SSC if you are a Graduate in Three Year Course in any discipline from a recognized University. You should have attained minimum 60% marks or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level.
(b) You can also apply for SSC iIf you are a BE or B Tech in Four Year Course from a recognized university with minimum 60% marks or equivalent.
(c) You can also apply if you are a Final Year student. You should produce Degree certificates issued by the Govt. recognized University as per the date stipulated in the advertisement.

Advertisements for AFCAT are released by the IAF in the months of June and December.
Keep in mind that you will not be eligible for this mode of entry if you have failed the PABT earlier or if you’re a flight cadet suspended from flying training at Air Force Academy.
AFCAT Syllabus:
In the first stage, there will be a written examination that will consist of objective type multiple choice questions related to: verbal ability , general awareness, numerical ability, reasoning and military aptitude. The duration of the test will be of 2 hours.
The second stage tests are conducted at the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs) at Dehradun, Mysore, Gandhinagar or Varanasi. This stage will be of two parts.
The first part will test your Intelligence and will be conducted along with some other tests. In the second part of this test, a psychologist will conduct a psychological test. Psychological test consist of a group tests and a personal interview.

After qualifying in all of these tests, you will have to appear for a Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT). As mentioned earlier, this will test is to check your ability to read instruments, mental strength and control over your movements.
If you qualify in all the above tests a medical examination will be done to check your health and fitness.
Now, you are eligible for training course at the Air Force Academy . Upon completion of your training from the academy, you will be a commissioned as a pilot of the Indian Air Force for the next 14 years.

Air Chief Marshal P. C. Lal had a diploma in journalism from King's College London and was attending the Bar at the Middle Temple when World War II cut short his career in these spheres and he was called to join the Air Force. His span of service covers a period of thirty-three years, from the end of 1939 to the beginning of 1973. It includes the Burma campaign of World War II, the restricted fighting in Kashmir in 1947 and 1948, the Chinese debacle in 1962, and the two full-scale wars with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. After retiring from the IAF, he was recalled to the public sector. He retired as the joint chairman of Air India and Indian Airlines in February 1980. He was also the chairman of the National Institute of Training in Industrial Engineering and a member of the board of the Reserve Bank of India for a number of years.
